After serving two years of a four-year prison sentence for major welfare fraud (1988-1990), in 1993 Richard produced his own public access cable TV show entitled, “Tips Against Crime.” The title of the show was taken from the title of his first book, “Tips Against Crime, Written from Prison,” published in 1993 by Sandcastle Publishing.

Jones has raised four daughters as a single parent after the death of his wife in 1981. He has been a mentor to male youth through various youth organizations in Los Angeles and Riverside County in California.
